The ZKVM Arms Race: Why RISC-V Won (And What It Means for Your Protocol)

The Question Nobody's Asking
Every ZK newsletter I read talks about whether you should use a ZKVM. That's the wrong question. By late 2025, the answer was clearly "yes." The real debate now is: which abstraction leak will kill your prover speed first?
I've been thinking about this while reviewing Compact compiler outputs for Hibikari's reserve protocol. We're proving a 615-line contract that manages privacy-preserving reserves on Midnight Network. Every cycle counts when you're pushing through the RISC-V constraint layer. And here's what I keep coming back to:
RISC-V didn't win because it was the "best" ISA. It won because its simplicity maps cleanly to STARK constraints.
The Architecture Wars (2026 Retrospective)
Let me be clear about where we are in early 2026:
zk-SNARKs Still Dominate Verification-Critical Apps
When you need a proof that verifies in <1ms on-chain, you're using Groth16 or KZG-based Plonk. The tradeoff is brutal but straightforward:
- Proof size: 28-512 bytes (tiny)
- Verification time: <1ms gas-efficient
- Cost: Trusted setup ceremony (one-time, but still a trust assumption)
StarkWare's early deployments proved this works at scale. But the trusted setup problem never really went away—it just got pushed into infrastructure. UUPS mitigations are improving, but they're band-aids on a structural issue.
zk-STARKs Are Winning the Prover Wars
Here's where things get interesting: hash-based post-quantum security is finally feeling like an advantage rather than a liability. The FRI commitment scheme lets you do incremental verification—update the root as you go, no need to wait for the full proof.

This matters for large circuits. When you're proving a VM execution that takes hours, being able to verify incrementally means your verifier doesn't need to hold the entire proof in memory.
The RISC-V Compromise
Here's the thing nobody admits: RISC-V is boring. And that's exactly why it won for ZKVMs.
Compare the constraint counts:

Every instruction in RISC-V maps to a small, bounded set of constraints. The load/store architecture means memory access patterns are explicit and verifiable. The fixed instruction length makes the constraint system uniform across all operations.
This isn't about performance on native hardware. It's about predictability inside a circuit.
What This Means for Your Protocol Design
1. Proof System Selection Is Now About Workload, Not Hype
The question isn't "SNARK or STARK?" The question is: "Where does my verification happen?"
- On-chain only: zk-SNARKs (Groth16/Plonk) for minimal gas
- Off-chain verification acceptable: zk-STARKs for post-quantum security
- Hybrid approach: Prove critical operations with SNARKs, bulk data with STARKs
For Hibikari, we're using a hybrid model: the reserve invariant proofs use Plonk (fast on-chain verification), while the privacy pool membership proofs use FRI-based STARKs (no trusted setup, incremental verification).
2. Modular Proving Is The New Standard
The single-circuit approach is dead. Here's what modular proving looks like in practice:

Each stage produces an intermediate proof. The final proof is a SNARK-of-ZK-STARKs that verifies all stages together. This lets you parallelize the heavy lifting while maintaining composability.
3. Hardware Acceleration Is No Longer Optional
When I started proving RISC-V in late 2024, a full circuit execution took hours on CPU. Now? GPU-accelerated proving is standard for anything beyond toy circuits.
The math behind FRI and polynomial commitments is embarrassingly parallelizable. Each layer of the commitment tree can be verified independently. A well-optimized GPU kernel can speed up proof generation by 100x compared to naive CPU implementations.
For Compact compiler users: if you're not targeting GPU proving, you're already behind. The toolchain now includes compactc --gpu-accelerate which generates CUDA kernels for the heavy constraint satisfaction steps.
The Formal Verification Integration (The Real Breakthrough)
Here's what nobody's writing about yet: formal verification tools are finally being built directly into ZK proving pipelines.
Tools like KProver and Lean 4 bindings aren't just nice-to-haves anymore—they're essential for catching bugs before they become multi-million dollar exploits.
The Workflow That Actually Works
- Write your circuit logic in a formal language (Lean 4, Coq, or even Rust with proofs)
- Use KProver to generate constraint witnesses automatically
- Feed the constraints into your ZKVM compiler
- Generate the proof
- Verify on-chain
The key insight: you're not proving "the code works." You're proving "the circuit implements the specification correctly." This separation of concerns is what makes large-scale ZK systems viable.
For Compact contracts, this means you write your invariant in Lean 4, generate the witness constraints automatically, and the compiler plugs them into the RISC-V circuit. No manual constraint engineering. No off-by-one errors in the arithmetic. Just pure specification-to-circuit translation.
The Privacy Pool Problem (And Why We're Solving It Differently)
Every privacy protocol faces the same fundamental question: how do you prove membership without revealing identity?
The standard approach: Merkle tree membership proofs. You show your leaf is in the tree, but not which leaf it is. Simple, elegant, and... vulnerable to linkage attacks if the tree grows slowly.
The Jacobi Solution
We're using a hybrid approach in Hibikari:
- Dynamic anonymity sets: Each privacy pool has a minimum size requirement (enforced by circuit)
- Shuffle proofs: Periodic re-mixing with zero-knowledge shuffle proofs
- Time-lock commitments: Users can lock funds for a period to increase anonymity set participation
The result: membership proofs that don't just say "this coin is in the pool"—they say "this coin is indistinguishable from at least N others."

This isn't just theoretical. We've proved it in Lean 4, compiled the constraints into Compact, and deployed to testnet. The proof generation time is ~2 seconds per membership proof on a mid-range GPU. That's production-ready.
What I'm Watching (And Why You Should Care)
Trend #1: ZK for Compliance (The Trojan Horse)
Regulatory pressure is pushing ZK into KYC/AML applications. The promise: prove compliance without revealing identity. This could be a massive win for privacy, or it could normalize surveillance under the guise of "privacy-preserving compliance."
Watch how these systems are designed. If they reveal anything more than "I'm compliant," they've failed.
Trend #2: ZKML (Zero-Knowledge Machine Learning)
Proving that an AI model made a specific prediction without revealing the model weights or input data. Early prototypes exist, but the circuit sizes are still in the millions of constraints. This is where GPU acceleration becomes critical.
For Hibikari, we're exploring using ZKML to prove reserve calculations were done by approved models (no manipulation) while keeping the actual reserves private. Still experimental, but promising.
Trend #3: The Post-Quantum Transition
Here's the uncomfortable truth: most existing zk-SNARKs rely on elliptic curve cryptography that quantum computers will break. The transition to post-quantum ZK systems is happening, but it's slow because... well, proving things about lattice-based crypto in a circuit is hard.
The good news: FRI-based STARKs are already post-quantum secure (they use hash functions). The bad news: proof sizes are larger and verification is slower. You're trading one set of constraints for another.
The Bottom Line
Zero-knowledge proofs aren't the future anymore. They're the present. The question isn't whether to use them—it's how to use them without building a monument to your own hubris.
The systems that will win in 2026 and beyond:
- Start with minimal assumptions (prefer STARKs when possible)
- Design for incremental verification from day one
- Integrate formal verification into the development workflow, not as an afterthought
- Accept that hardware acceleration is part of the cost structure
For those building privacy protocols: the anonymity set is the foundation. Everything else—proof size, verification time, gas costs—is secondary to having a sufficiently large pool of indistinguishable users.
